Beginner Course [Level 1]

370 US dollars
9th Street

Service Description

Tuesdays @ 5:45-8:15 pm, November 3-December 15 w/Isabella **No class on November 23-29** In this 6-week course, students will learn the sculpture and hand-building process, paired with creating ceramic molds to produce textures or press-mold multiples! With their army of multiples, students will build larger abstract ‘Frankenstein's monster’ bodies of work! One could also use their molds to textureize, add features to other works, or produce a larger body of minis! Tools & Materials: PLEASE BRING IN: a small sculpture, something with interesting texture, and/or a small object! The goal is to focus more on one-part press molds (check out our slip casting classes for more intricate plaster molds!!), so objects without intricate overhangs, or objects where the focus will be on one side are encouraged. Examples will be provided! Please bring a sketchbook to plan and record your progress! Feel free to bring any tools you may already have and want to use, otherwise some tools will be provided to use during classes. If you have any reference photos, please bring printed copies. Week 1: Introduction In week 1, students will learn handbuilding techniques and start to brainstorm their project! We will focus on using the objects we all brought in (as well as some provided options) to create textured molds to send into a kiln firing asap! Week 2: By week two, each student should have at least one mold now bisqued and ready to use to create multiples! Students will create internal supports if needed, and get started on their larger “Frankenstein’s monster” works! Work time and individual consultation. Week 3: Week three will be focused on continuing the pieces! Work time and individual consultation. Week 4: Last week for greenware! Finalize your features, add on final pieces, and get detailed! Your piece will need time to dry out so it can be fired in time for next week’s glazing. At this time, underglaze is encouraged. Work time and individual consultation. Week 5: Glaze day! Learn all about glazes, finishes, and different application techniques! Work time and individual consultation. Week 6: Group potluck and constructive critique. Discuss projects, reflect, receive and give feedback! Please bring your sketches/maquettes to showcase the progress of your project over the last few weeks. Includes- 25lbs of clay - 6-weeks of 2.5 hours of instruction - Unlimited use of studio during open studio hours - Firing fees - Glazes
