Service Description

Thursdays 6:00pm-9:00pm, March 28th - May 16th Wheel throwing and hand-building joins wood working in this advanced class 8 week class at SoMa. 4 weeks will be spent making functional ceramic objects -- honey jars, butter dishes, utensil holders, and nesting bowls. 4 weeks will be spent in the woodshop learning spindle turning on the lathe and creating large serving boards. This class will teach you skills that will advance your wheel throwing and hand-building while providing an introduction to the lathe and other woodworking tools. This is a fast paced class and attendance at each class session is highly recommended as each class will build on the last. Each student will walk away with ceramic honey jars, a wooden honey dipper, a wooden rolling pin, a ceramic butter dish, a ceramic utensil holder, and 1-2 intricate serving boards. All materials included ( 25lbs of clay and wood for lathe projects and serving boards). *** Also included is open studio hours on the ceramic side in addition to office hours time in the woodshop. Ceramics Week 1 + 2 Week 1 (3/28) – Throwing ceramic jars + lids Week 2 (4/4) – Throwing ceramic utensil holders + handbuilding a butter dish Woodshop Week 3 + 4 Week 3 (4/11)– spindle turning – honey dipper Week 4 (4/18) – turning wooden rolling pin Ceramics Week 5 + 6 Week 5 (4/25) – Throwing nesting bowls, throwing small bowls off the hump for the charcuterie Week 6 – (5/2) Trimming nesting bowls/small bowls/glazing Woodshop Week 7 + 8 Week 7 – (5/9) design / glue up board Week 8 – (5/16) finishing board / planing / cutting/ sanding/ router
