Handbuilding Candelabras(Session 1) 2026
All levels welcome!
Service Description
Thursdays @ 6:00-8:30pm, January 7th - February 11th In this six-week class, we’ll explore the process of designing and hand-building sculptural candelabras — from concept sketches to finished, glazed works. Students will learn surface testing, construction techniques, and how to integrate functionality with personal expression. All levels welcome. Don’t miss this opportunity to learn from Annie Artell and elevate your Handbuilding & Sculpture practice! Week 1: Inspiration & Exploration We'll begin by looking at the history and form of candelabras. Discussion of balance, stability, and symbolic meaning in lighting forms. Create test tiles to explore surface treatments, glazes, and slips. Students will sketch forms / generate ideas. Week 2: Construction Planning & Maquettes Discuss structural planning: armature, weight distribution, and candle placement. Build miniature maquettes (small-scale models) to refine proportions and test assembly. Create a construction plan for final pieces. Week 3: Building the Final Piece (Part I) Begin hand-building final candelabra using coil, slab, or hybrid techniques. Learn how to reinforce joints and build for durability. Continue to refine forms and textures. Week 4: Building the Final Piece (Part II) Continue working on final candelabras. Focus on detail work, surface texture, and craftsmanship. Begin drying process for completed works. Week 5: Finishing & Pre-Fire Preparation Clean up surfaces: smooth, carve, or refine details. Final touch-ups and underglaze additions (if applicable). Week 6: Glazing + Group Reflection Finish glazing all work. We’ll end with a group discussion where students can present their candelabras and speak about the stories behind them. By the end of the course, each student will have completed a unique, functional candelabra — an illuminated sculpture that merges design, craft, and personal expression.
