Service Description

Mondays from 5:45-8:15pm, May 11th-June 15th Growing Forms: Chia, Clay, and Living Surfaces Rachel Heibel This class explores the intersection of ceramics, growth, and cultural history through the creation of porous clay forms designed to sprout chia seeds. Inspired by Mexican traditions in which chia-covered ceramic figures were used in religious and seasonal rituals, students will create sculptural forms that come alive over time. Historically, chia seeds were deeply embedded in Indigenous Mesoamerican life—as food, currency, and ritual offering—and later became part of syncretic Catholic traditions like Semana Santa, where sprouting figures symbolized renewal and care. 6-Week Syllabus Week 1: Introduction + Pinch Forms Week 2: Coil Building Basics Week 3: Form Development + Surface Design **Discuss how surface texture helps chia adhere** Week 4: Refinement + Structural Integrity Week 5: Drying + Pre-Firing Prep Week 6: Chia Activation 🌱
