Service Description

Tuesdays @ 6-8:30pm, January 6th - February 10th Dive into the art of creating impressive large-scale pottery in “Go Big or Go Home: Throwing Large.” Learn how to control clay, manage complex forms, and refine your skills to create striking bowls, vases, and more. Explore the intricacies of working with larger volumes of clay, managing weight distribution, and perfecting your control for smooth, even forms. 6-weeks of wheel throwing designed for those individuals who are already acclimated with wheel throwing, but want to further their skills and take it to the next level. Week 1: Throwing Big for Height Overview: Revisit throwing big basics; Wedging, controlling moisture levels, wall thickness, cylinder perfection Demo: 5/6lb bottle demo, Wedging; ram's head and spiral. Stacking two balls to make centering large amounts of clay easier Week 2: Coiling for height Overview: Students will throw a base, then stack coils on top for height and shape (we might need some blowtorches to do this during one class) Demo: Tall vase Week 3: Stacked Forms Overview: Students will learn to make complex profiles by stacking two cylinders on top of each other for height, and then learn to shape the cylinder Demo: Stacking two different forms together for unique profiles Week 4: Specific shapes - moon jar, large pitcher, korean vase, etc. Overview: Students will begin to learn trimming and glazing techniques for larger vessels LAST CLASS to make new work; all work must be ready for trimming and finishing by next class.* Week 5: “Trimfest” and workday Overview: LAST DAY FOR WETWORK*- Students will finish up all wet work to be ready by the end of class for bisque firing. Colored slip, sgraffito, and other demos will be covered as necessary. Week 6: Glazing Overview: Review techniques for glazing larger pieces; spray booth, pouring glazes, dipping, brushing, etc. All-inclusive including: - 2(x) 25lbs of clay -6-weeks of 2.5 hours of instruction - Unlimited use of studio during open studio hours - Firing fees - Glazes
