Figurative Ceramics with Janina Myronova

Service Description

Join ceramic artist Janina Myronowa at Clayroom SoMa for a two-day immersive workshop focused on figurative sculpture and storytelling through clay. Participants will explore handbuilding techniques used in Janina’s sculptural practice while developing their own unique ceramic figures. Throughout the workshop, Janina will guide participants through the process of creating expressive sculptural forms using slab building, pinching, and coil building techniques. The class will focus on building character, gesture, composition, and individuality within ceramic sculpture, while also introducing approaches to surface decoration with underglazes. Day 1 – Saturday, October 24 10:00 AM – 5PM (with 1-hour lunch break) Janina will introduce her artistic practice, inspirations, and examples of her figurative ceramic work. After a live demonstration of slab building, pinching, and coil building techniques Janina uses to construct sculptural figures, participants will begin building their own sculptures with individual guidance and feedback. Janina will provide tips for refining forms, attaching elements, and balancing proportions, as well as individual consultation. Day 2 – Sunday, October 25 10:00 AM – 5PM (with 1-hour lunch break) Janina will demonstrate underglaze painting, layering color and ceramic decal decoration. Participants will continue working on sculptures and surface decoration with one-on-one support from Janina. Janina will also discuss methods for enlarging projects for future sculptural work, as well as techniques for repairing ceramic pieces.
