Intermediate Course [Level 2]
Service Description
Wednesdays @ 6:30-9:00PM, June 24 - August 5 ** No class on June 29- July5** This is a mixed media, project-based class where students will create a piece or set of pieces that incorporates both ceramic and stainless steel chainmail elements. Students will explore different methods of attachment, chainmail weaves, and ceramic forms with 1:1 guidance from the instructor. Basic handbuilding experience is required but no prior chainmail experience is needed. Pieces should be no larger than 7”x7”x7”. Week 1: Planning Discussing form and dialogue between clay and chainmail as well as methods of attachment Overview basic chainmail techniques/weaves Mockups of potential forms 1:1 discussions about plans Make test tiles for glaze Week 2: Building and Problem Solving Students should have a general idea of their design coming into week 2 Start construction of piece/pieces 1:1 meetings for problem solving and planning chainmail Glaze test tiles Week 3: Work day Pieces should be nearing completion by end of class Finalize design/weaves for chainmail Week 4: Last Day for Clay All pieces should be ready to fire by end of class or already on firing shelf Chainmail demo + practice if finished with clay Week 5: Glazing + Chainmail Glaze piece Start/continue chainmail Week 6: Attaching Chainmail + Potluck!
