Service Description

Wednesdays 5:45-8:15 pm, Sep23-Oct28 with Kiran Joan Ceramic Lamp Making Class In this 6-week class, join Kiran Joan to explore the possibilities of making functional ceramic lamps by hand. Students will learn handbuilding techniques for constructing sculptural lamp forms, experiment with illustration and surface design using underglazes, and learn the basics of assembling their ceramic pieces with lamp hardware. By the end of the course, students will glaze, assemble, and take home a working ceramic lamp. Schedule Week 1: Introduction to ceramic lamps and lighting. Students arrive with ideas and begin designing and building their lamp forms. Week 2: Continue building and refining forms. Students complete their pieces in the greenware stage. Week 3: Develop illustrations and surface designs. Begin underglaze/slip application. Send finished work to bisque. Week 4: Glazing and learning techniques for wax application and creating clean surface details. Week 5: Continue glazing and surface refinement. Prepare pieces for final firing and lamp assembly. Week 6: Lamp assembly! Learn how to install hardware and wiring to transform ceramic forms into working lamps.
