The Coil Built Vessel: Techniques & Approaches with Mitch Iburg and Zoë Powell

Throughout history, potters have used various coil building methods to create a wide variety of vessels and objects. Whether seeking utilitarian or aesthetic goals, these forming techniques unite the world’s diverse spectrum of ceramic traditions. With new modernized ways of making now available to today’s ceramic artists, the choice of coil building allows us to continue the historic legacy of human-kind’s direct relationship with clay.

In this 2 day workshop, participants will learn coil building techniques with ceramicists Mitch Iburg and Zoë Powell that can be used to create a variety of shapes with historical and contemporary reference. By focusing on methods to aid efficiency and durability, the information provided will allow participants to build quickly and work on a larger scale.

Participants are encouraged to combine these techniques with other making methods to produce unique sculptural vessels and objects.
