Friday April 10th 7pm - Artist Talk (Free Event) Saturday April 11th 11am-5pm (w/ 1 hr lunch break) Sunday April 12th 11am -4pm (w/ 1 hr lunch break) This 2-day workshop invites participants to slow down, play, and reimagine their relationship to clay and time. Together we will make ceramic clocks, objects bound to time. While exploring processes that loosen its hold: working with pastel slips, reclaimed materials and single firing techniques that embrace chance. Clayroom SoMa; 375 9th Street Day 1: Introductions + concept: temporal slippage, play, reuse. Material overview: clay bodies, slips, pigments- Color tests tint vs saturation + fired references Demo/overview on tinting slips, line blends, gradients Demo: alternate casting & mold approaches Discussion about tools, mold making, alternative methodology, reclaim Freeform slip design + clock form building Focus on collaboration with material Begin drying for single firing Day 2: Surface refinement + adjustments Drying strategies for single firing Demo: drilling / preparing for clock mechanisms. Load kiln for single firing/ talk about single fire kiln programs. Wet sanding demo ( pre-fired samples) Install clock mechanisms (demo/ practice with prefired samples) Group discussion + reflection on process, time, value, tool making and best practices for material use/reuse. What’s included: All materials and hands-on instruction from Randi. Randi Bachman is a multidisciplinary artist whose practice engages ceramic materiality to explore memory and monument through experimental processes. They earned a BFA in Ceramics from the Kansas City Art Institute and is a 2025 MFA graduate of the Ceramics Program at Cranbrook Academy of Art in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. Bachman is the recipient of numerous awards, including the Ernest A. Jones Scholarship, the 2022 Regina Brown Fellowship, the Glenn C. Nelson Scholarship, the Ken Ferguson Scholarship, the McKeown Award, and the Cynthia and Edwina Bringle Scholarship. She has exhibited nationally at venues such as the Utah Museum of Contemporary Art (Salt Lake City, UT), Arc Gallery (Chicago, IL), Visual Arts Center (Richmond, VA), Cranbrook Museum of Art (Bloomfield Hills, MI), Vulpes Bastille (Kansas City, MO), DAAP Galleries (Cincinnati, OH), and Belger Arts Center (Kansas City, MO).
