Saturday (September 6th): 11am-5pm w/ 1 hour lunch break Sunday (September 7th): 11am-5pm w/ 1 hour lunch break Clayroom SoMa; 375 9th Street In this two-day workshop, students will learn the fundamentals of solid sculpting abstracted animal forms, beginning with intuitive sketches and moving directly into clay. This is a hands-on, sculptor’s sculpting class—equal parts technical challenge and creative freedom—designed to deepen your understanding of form, weight, and character. Day 1 will focus on building rotational sculptures—forms that command presence from every angle—with close attention paid to gravity, gesture, and clarity of line. Day 2, participants will learn the surgical techniques required to hollow out their solid forms for successful firing: cutting, scooping, and reassembling with precision. What’s included: -25 lbs of Clay, hands-on instruction from Austyn, firing services, tools. ** We recommend your own tools but we have some tools that can be borrowed if needed! Austyn Taylor (2016 MFA Alfred University) is a sculptor whose emotionally precise, instantly recognizable characters blend ancient archetypes with a refined, contemporary aesthetic. Developed in decades of graphite drawing and a deep material engagement with clay, her work bridges sincerity, absurdity, and sculptural clarity. Taylor’s sculptures are held in private collections in over 30 countries and have been exhibited internationally through leading galleries in New York, London, Tokyo, Beirut, Paris, Hong Kong, Seoul, Amsterdam, Dubai and many more beautiful cities.
