Service Description

Join us in this 2-day workshop led by renowned potter and sculptor from Bangkok, Thailand Chanakarn Semachai (a.k.a. Punch). Saturday (June 29th): 11am-5pm w/ 1 hour lunch break Sunday (June 30th): 11am-5pm w/ 1 hour lunch break Clayroom SoMa; 375 9th Street Day 1: Artist Talk + Demo (handbuild vessel with sculptural elements, dangling parts, and low relief decoration). Hands-on work time for students to coil build a jar and add sculptural elements such as characters, clouds, knobs, handles, etc. Day 2: Demo surface decoration on bisqueware (water color, sgraffito, underglaze pencil). Hands-on work time for students to finish jar, cut the lid, add finishing details and surface decoration. What’s included: -Clay, under-glazes, glazes, hands-on instruction from Punch. ** We recommend your own tools but we have some tools that can be borrowed if needed! Bangkok-born and raised, Chanakarn Semachai (Punch) is a ceramic artist and educator. Chanakarn graduated with her Bachelor in Fine and Applied Arts Degree in 2012 from Chulalongkorn University, Bangkok, Thailand. She earned a Master of Fine Arts degree from Edinboro University of Pennsylvania, USA. Chanakarn’s artwork focuses on the full spectrum of identity and multiculturalism. She also explores the possibility of blending elements of sculptural and functional work together, utilizing color and ornamentation to express personal narratives. Through these elements, and a dash of humor, she hopes to create special moments between her artwork and those who enjoy them.  Her work has been shown internationally, including in Thailand, Germany, Taiwan, China, and the United States. She is currently a faculty member at Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok, Thailand, where she teaches full-time creative ceramics.
