Join us in this 2-day workshop led by artist and sculptor Zoe Dufor Friday (May 9th) 6:30pm Free Artist Talk! Saturday (May 10th): 11am-5pm w/ 1 hour lunch break Sunday (May 11th): 11am-5pm w/ 1 hour lunch break Clayroom SoMa; 375 9th Street In this course, we will sculpt a reclined figure using contemporary hand building techniques informed informed by Renaissance and 19th century sculpting practices. We will sculpt from a supplied photo reference set, focusing on the large masses of the the body, and how they move in concert together to form a clear gesture. Our approach is based around close observation, and an emphasis on anatomical structure and form relationships. Students on how to think three-dimensionally, judging likeness with volume and mass. The class will cover basic anatomy, and how to use proportional cannons or measuring systems to sculpt a well proportioned figure at any scale. We will cover basic “block-in” technique, learning how to accurately establish the large relationships of the figure, before moving on to modeling and finishing techniques clay. We will be working with stoneware clay and there will be an option to preparing our pieces to be fired at the end of class, so students can go home with a finished piece. class will include sculpting demonstration, constructive critiques, and lecture. No experience is necessary, teaching will be tailored to individuals. Day 1: How to use two dimensional references to create three dimensional objects, breakdown of measuring techniques, and how to use proportional cannons, with brief introduction to critical anatomical points, and material management. Blocking in the basic structure of their figures, discuss tools and tools usage for surface modeling, and how to develop the figure’s details. Day 2: Demonstration on how best to tool the clay to create full and life-like forms, sculptural development, surface finishing techniques, how to hollow the sculpture for firing, and the best firing practices ceramic sculptures as well as surface decaration/ finish for figurative sculpt. What’s included: -25 lbs of Clay, hands-on instruction from Zoe, firing services, tools. ** We recommend your own tools but we have some tools that can be borrowed if needed!
