Korean Pottery with Kris (Session 4)

Service Description
Sundays 11am - 2pm, May 18th - June 22nd (optional 6/28 meeting 11-1) This immersive 6-week course will provide a cultural and historical overview of traditional Korean vase forms as well as cover various pottery techniques that will build upon each other to improve on general throwing skills. A greater appreciation for what is being created will be provided through combining the foundational education on Korean ceramics along with the creation of these vessels. Some techniques that will be covered are stoneware and b-mix preparation and throwing, throwing tall narrow cylinders, methods for creating the maebyeong vessel form, section throwing moon jars in 2 parts, trimming a deep foot, and various glaze surface design techniques. This intermediate class is designed for students acclimated with wheel throwing who have a desire to gain an education on Korean ceramics and learn to create these beautiful and challenging forms. This course will have an extra 7th session on Saturday 6/28 to review finished works, learn traditional bojagi wrapping for the pieces, and have light lunch. Week 1: Overview of history of Goryeo Dynasty, cylinder practice, maebyeong throwing demo. Week 2: Throwing practice and a maebyeong demonstration will be given with a larger amount of clay, as well as a demonstration of attaching 2 cylinders to achieve greater height. Week 3: Overview of ceramic history of Joseon Dynasty, 1 part moon jar. Week 4: Section throwing 2 part moon jars and this class will begin with a demonstration of attaching 2 sections to create a 2-part moon jar, which is the traditional making method. Week 5: Trimming, overview of Korean imagery and techniques. Week 6: Glazing day! Week 7: This optional session will be provided for students to show their finished work done throughout this course, as well as have room for discussion on individual goals for what is next for them in their ceramics journey. There will be instruction on how to pack work for shipping, as well as an example of traditional bojagi wrapping for boxed finished work. We will end with a light Korean lunch. All-inclusive including: - 25lbs of clay - 6-weeks of 2.5 hours of instruction - Unlimited use of the studio during open studio hours - Firing fees - Glazes
