Sundays 11am - 2pm, August 17th - September 21st This immersive 6-week course is designed for intermediate potters seeking to strengthen their throwing skills and explore the rich tradition of Korean ceramics. Through focused instruction, students will improve their general throwing techniques while learning to create iconic Korean forms such as moon jars and maebyeong vases. Some of the main techniques that we will focus on are scaling up and refining our shapes. In addition to hands-on practice the course integrates foundational education on Korean ceramic history and aesthetics. By the end of the course, participants will not only have improved their technical abilities but also developed a more informed and intentional approach to the work. This course is ideal for potters looking to challenge themselves and elevate their craftsmanship. To qualify for this course students must be able to comfortably throw 5lb. Some techniques that will be covered are Bmix and porcelain preparation, throwing tall narrow cylinders, methods for creating the maebyeong and moon jar forms, trimming techniques, and glazing techniques including the spray booth. Individualized one-on-one instruction will be provided to all students throughout the course as well. *Optional 7th session held at the Asian Art Museum. This course will build on techniques from the previous Korean Ceramics class but attendance in the previous class is not required. Week 1: Class introductions and introductory lesson about cylinder throwing techniques to achieve our vase forms. A demonstration will be given on spiral wedging clay as well as throwing a tall and narrow cylinder. Week 2: Throwing practice & we will go over a brief history of the Goryeo Dynasty to provide context for our first form - the maebyeong. Photos of the traditional vessels as well as instructor examples will be shown. Week 3: Continued Maebyeong and cylinder practice with individualized attention to each student. Week 4: Overview of ceramic history of Joseon Dynasty, 1 part moon jar. A demonstration will be given on throwing a 3lb and 7lb moon jar with B-Mix. Week 5: We will start this class by having each student throw either a moon jar or a maebyeong vase. Then a demo on trimming with a chuck. Week 6: Glazing Week 7: Optional Asian Art Museum trip All-inclusive including: - 25lbs of clay - 6-weeks of 2.5 hours of instruction - Unlimited use of the studio during open studio hours - Firing fees - Glazes
