Create Your Own Meal with Nikki Lau

Service Description

Join us in this two day workshop with renowned sculpture and food lover Nikki Lau! Previous handbuilding experience is helpful but not required. Saturday (March 2nd ): 11am-4pm (w/ 1 hour lunch break) Sunday (March 3rd): 11am-4pm (w/ 1 hour lunch break) Clayroom SoMa; 375 9th Street In this workshop you will learn how to make a ceramic sculptural plate or bowl of food with the potential of it being functional! -You’ll learn how to make a plate or platter with a hanging system (wall art optional). -Form different types of food: meats, dairy, vegetables, fruits, carbs etc. -Add textures and glazes to give depth and color to the food. -Bring it all together with glaze and underglaze to make a beautiful plate of food. Day 1 students will create plates and different food sculptures. Day 2 students will attach foods to plates, work on details, and add hanging systems. Techniques covered: -Hand building: Coil, pinch, kurinuki, texture imprinting -Glaze application: Layering and fusing -Hanging systems -Slip piping What’s included: - 1/2 bag of B-mix clay - Underglazes, slip, glazes - Firing (cone 5 electric) ** We recommend your own tools but we have some tools that can be borrowed if needed! Nikki Lau was born and raised in San Francisco, CA. She received her MFA in ceramics at Pennsylvania State University in 2016. She received her BA in Interdisciplinary Visual Arts at the University of Washington in 2008. She was the artist resident at The Clay Art Center in New York from 2018-2019 and the 2019-2020 resident at Armory Art Center in Florida. Her work is a mixture of sculpture and pottery. In 2020 at the height of the pandemic, Nikki found her way back to San Francisco. She started making and selling pottery full time.
